Antigone

The inaugural production of Baylor Theatre’s “Green Series,” Antigone was produced with the mindset of “simplicity is key”. The directors wanted to show how Sophocles’ play was still not only applicable, but enjoyable in the 21st century. Set in an underground bunker, the whole design team worked together to create a timeless look that could be from 1945 or 2019.

I went forward with a few “rules” for myself: a strict color palette, a timeless feeling, and only using the stock already owned by the University. I wanted the clothes to feel old, but not impossible for today. I pulled inspiration from many sources, from 1940’s army uniforms to Jackie Kennedy. The directors and I made a point to use green to communicate something eerie and uncomfortable and to highlight the only instance of red: Haemon’s corpse.

Spoiler alert, by the way.
