Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche
Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche was produced at Baylor University in fall 2019 as an Advanced Directing capstone. Set in 1956, the play follows the women of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein at their annual Quiche Breakfast. Everything is going fine until a literal nuclear bomb drops and traps them inside their meeting hall. A hilarious story about sisterhood and being true to oneself, the director, Kat Phillips, and I wanted to use bright colors and striking accessories to complement the actors’ natural charisma and vibrance.
I used pieces already owned by the university with the exception of the periwinkle dress worn by Ginny. I made it using a Vogue pattern based on a design originally printed in 1954. The challenge was to create a look suitable for a proper English lady that could withstand an animalistic quiche eating frenzy. I have to admit, I was a little self-indulgent, as periwinkle is my favorite color! I also couldn’t resist the women’s outfits roughly forming a rainbow as a nod to the LGBTQ+ flag.
(If you’re wondering, yes I did have the honor of playing Ginny)
